| Synthetic enzyme
substrates are generally divided into chromogenic and fluorogenic substrates. With
chromogenic compounds, such as pNA-containing peptide substrates, rates of
hydrolysis upon cleavage are measured in continuous or stopped assays in a
spectrophotometer. Rates of hydrolysis of fluorogenic compounds, such as MCA substrates, are measured in continuous
or stopped assays in a spectrofluorometer.
